OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol, a model five times cheaper

Unveiled at the DevDay conference, it comes close to the flagship model's performance for a fraction of the price.

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol at its DevDay conference in late September. The company says it comes close to the performance of its flagship model, GPT-6 Astra, for a fifth of the price.

For developers, it is billed at 2 dollars per million input tokens and 10 dollars per million output tokens, against 10 and 50 dollars for Astra. The latter remains recommended for the most demanding scientific tasks.

At the same time, OpenAI gave up on releasing GPT-6.1 Astra: according to Reuters, the model did not meet the safety bar required internally.
