The processor is the computer’s “brain”. But what does it really look like?

Billions of switches

A modern chip contains billions of transistors. Each one works like a microscopic switch: it lets the current through or not. These two states correspond to the 1s and 0s of binary language.

A clock that sets the pace

The processor moves forward to the beat of a clock. A frequency of 3 GHz means 3 billion cycles per second. With each cycle, its calculations move forward.

Several cores working in parallel

Today’s processors have several cores, able to handle different tasks at the same time. That’s what lets you play, chat and listen to music all at once.
