The most prestigious race in the universe was born… out of boredom.

🏁 Bored workers (around 2467)

In the Ellis system, terraforming workers wait for their planets to be ready. To kill time, they race their work ships. Amon Murray, a smuggler and gambler, smells an opportunity: he takes bets, then funds a real race with a credit purse. The first Murray Cup takes place in 2479. By 2488, Murray has gone legit, and he’s called the father of modern star racing.

🏆 Two ways to win

  • Classic (once called “Hare”): pure speed and navigation.
  • Blitz (once called “Tortoise”): weapons are allowed, to disable rivals without destroying them.

The race crosses the whole Ellis system in several stages: asteroid belts, gravity wells, rings and targeting gates. Its most feared sections have nicknames: the “Sorrow Sea” and the “Boneyard”.

🌟 Its legends

  • Ian Rikkord, the first winner (2479), in a heavily modified RSI Nova: he started the tradition of tuned ships.
  • Terra McConoway, the first two-time winner (2495).
  • Issigon Ado, the first Banu to win.
  • Dax “The Hax” Emmelmann, speed record in 2731 thanks to tweaked thrusters.
  • Zack Hugh, winner in 2942, killed during his victory lap by an amateur pilot who lost control. Since 2943, you need 20 season points to qualify.

🎮 In the game: Arena Commander’s races are a direct nod to this tradition.
