It’s the darkest story of the Messer era, and the one that changed the Empire’s laws.

👽 A historic discovery (2784)

Imperial pathfinders discover a still-primitive intelligent life form on Garron II: the first non-spacefaring species humanity has ever met. Imperator Linton Messer XI seizes on it as a symbol and promises to help the species evolve. His line echoes across the Empire: “We will be gods.”

Dr Michael Shiherlis and his team settle on an orbital platform to study this civilisation and decode its language.

⛏️ The betrayal

But a survey reveals the planet’s natural resources. Messer changes course: he courts terraforming and mining companies. Shiherlis objects and plans to go public. Betrayed by a colleague, he is sent to the Charon III prison without trial. The mining rights are sold, the terraforming machines transform the atmosphere… and the native species dies out.

✊ The fall of the Messers (2792)

The activist group The Tide releases footage of the devastation. The public remembers the Imperator’s fine promises, and the anger sweeps the regime away: the Messers are overthrown before the terraforming is even finished.

🌱 The legacy

  • Imperator Erin Toi shuts down the terraformers and makes Garron II a nature preserve.
  • The Senate passes the Fair Chance Act, which protects planets harbouring developing life. Garron II is the first to benefit.
  • Scientists have been trying ever since to restore the planet to its original state.
  • Almost a century later, Imperator Salehi cites Garron II as the inspiration for the Synthworld project.
